The Astronomy Badge
Scout/Guide/Cubs/Brownie Leaders Astronomy Badge
The fascination and interest in astronomy and space has never been so high. This, we find, is especially so with young people.
Scout, Guides, Explorers, Cubs, Brownies have an opportunity to study for an astronomy badge or they may be simply in awe of the night sky (often seen best during summer camps) …along with the mysteries and fascination it holds.
The Hampshire Astronomical Group hosts many visits for uniformed groups throughout the year as part of their astronomy badge activities. The observatory staff often remark at the probing and thoughtful questions young people ask and the enthusiasm they have for the subject.
This 1 day course for Uniformed Leaders (and parent helpers) is aimed at providing background information to support you in delivering the various astronomy badges. In addition to presentations, we shall tour the observatory and consider the best telescopes and equipment for taking on summer camps etc..
You will leave the day with all course material on a memory stick (or similar) for you to use with your troop/pack. The course is delivered in a relaxed style …and we also aim to have fun during the day!
You will also be given many suggestions (drawn from local and national sources) for astronomy projects which you can share with the scouts/guides etc. for their projects. You also will be given a host of links to web sites which can give you accurate and up to date information on astronomy and space activities as well as access to free downloads. These can also be passed on to those wishing to undertake an astronomy/space project.
The course tutor, Graham Bryant, is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Chairman of the Group. He has been involved in astronomy for over 47 years, and lectures across Southern England and presented at National and International Conferences. He is a part time presenter at the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester . He holds qualifications in adult education.
Graham currently offers mentorship to final year BSc Mathematics Students from the University of Portsmouth whilst they are undertaking their final year astronomy project at the Clanfield Observatory and he also delivers the Hampshire Astronomical Group's 20 week Astronomy Course at the observatory.
